Cared for by National Trust Cymru, the 13th century castle in Welshpool is the perfect place to create cherished festive memories, with its rich history, breathtaking surroundings, and a festive program full of Victorian charm and twinkling lights.

Running until 5 January, A Dickensian Christmas see Powis Castle transformed into a spell-binding Victorian Christmas wonderland, which has been inspired by Charles Dickens’ timeless classic A Christmas Carol. The display immerses visitors in the sights, scents, sounds and spirit of a 19th-century Christmas celebration.

Step into beautifully adorned rooms, where flickering candlelight casts a warm glow on lush evergreen garlands, intricate decorations, and carefully arranged scenes that bring Dickens’ world to life. Imagine stepping into the pages of the beloved story, with every detail evoking the warmth, joy, and nostalgia of Christmases past.

The castle’s grandeur provides the perfect setting for this immersive experience, allowing visitors to reflect on the enduring themes of kindness and generosity that Dickens championed. It’s a journey into the past that reminds us of the timeless magic of Christmas.

From 13 to 23 December, the magic continues after dark with a breathtaking multimedia Christmas experience in the castle’s courtyard.

As twilight falls, the castle’s walls and courtyard come alive with twinkling projections, casting an ethereal glow that highlights the castle’s architectural beauty. Explore the grounds during extended evening hours from 4.30pm to 7.00pm, soaking up the enchanting atmosphere while marvelling at the interplay of light and shadow against the winter night sky.

The illuminations provide the perfect backdrop for family photos, a romantic stroll, or simply an opportunity to pause and appreciate the season’s beauty in a truly unique setting.

In addition to the Dickensian displays and mesmerising lights, visitors can look forward to festive treats at the castle’s café, unique shopping opportunities at the gift shop, and winter garden and woodland trails for people of all ages.

Janet Redler, Managing Director of Janet Redler Travel, said: “Powis Castle’s combination of history, tradition and Christmas magic make it the perfect destination for a winter visit. Whether you’re exploring the Victorian-inspired rooms or gazing at the shimmering light displays, the atmosphere is sure to leave you feeling festive and inspired.”

Built in the 13th century as a medieval fortress, Powis Castle is furnished with decorative fabrics, world-class paintings, furniture, tapestries, and the unique Clive Collection of South Asian objects. The interior reflects the Elizabethan period through to the Edwardian period.

With views across the Severn Valley, the world-famous garden retains many of its original features, including 17th century Italianate terraces lined with vibrant herbaceous borders and 30ft clipped yew trees, an Edwardian formal garden with century-old apple trees and rose beds and a peaceful woodland area.
